The National Cherry Festival will salute the many Heroes of today and yesterday during itsinaugural Heroes’ Day, Monday, July 6th.  Festival goers serving in all branches of the Armed Forces, firefighters, first responders, as well as Public Safety and Homeland Security Personnel will be recognized with a Festival Hero Medallion courtesy of Cherryland Electric Cooperative.  Festival Hero Medallions will be available at the Festival Information Booth located on the grounds of the Festival Open Space near Marina Drive.

An expo area full of friendly characters and vehicles will be on display at the Festival Open Space Monday, July 6, beginning at 10 a.m.  Visitors will see first hand the American Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle, a 1956 La France fire truck, a Pierce ladder truck, and even a restored 1937 Ford Sedan Police Car courtesy of the State Police.  “Sparky” the Fire Dog from the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, “McGruff” the Crime Fighting Canine from the Grand Traverse County Sherriff’s Department, and “Mr. Cherry” will be on hand to greet children and children at heart.

             

Bring your lawnchairs and join us for ‘A Salute to Heroes’ on the Bay Side Music Stage where Northwestern Michigan College Community and Jazz Bands, along with the Cherry Capital Chorus will perform patriotic favorites in a pops concert honoring all heroes from military active duty personnel and veterans, to emergency and first responder personnel. Heroes will be admitted Free (with a Festival Heroes’ Medallion) into the Bay Side Music Stage area on Monday evening, July 6th. 

Heroes’ Extras will include deals and discounts on festival food fare at the Open Space throughout day.  Now there’s even more reasons for ‘Heroes’, from near and far, to visit Traverse City.  Participating Downtown Traverse City Merchant Association members will salute ‘Heroes’ by offering special savings and added value during the entire shopping day, Monday, July 6. 

Special lodging packages will also be offered to ‘Heroes’ and their guests at member lodging properties of the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau.  For details, ‘Heroes’ may visit mytraversecity.com for details.
